Women's Soccer: Raiders fall on road to Norwich, 2-1

(Northfield, Vt.) Freshman Ashley Glynn (Salem, N.H.) scored her first career goal however it was not enough as the Rivier University Women's Soccer team fell on the road this evening at Norwich University, 2-1 in the first Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest of the season for both squads. Rivier is now 1-2, 0-1 GNAC on the year while the Cadets improve to 1-2, 1-0 GNAC.

Norwich broke the scoreless tie in the 31st minute as senior Meghan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) ran down a long through ball from the back line, cut around a Rivier defender back towards the center of the field, drew the Raiders' goalkeeper off her line and then fired a shot around her into the left corner of the net.

The Cadets would double their lead in the 63rd minute when senior Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) scored on a perfectly placed free kick into the top left corner of the net from about 25 yards out.

Glynn then got the Raiders on the board just a minute later as she converted a penalty kick after Norwich was whistled for a hand ball in the box. The first-year forward calmly tucked the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Junior Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, N.H.) made nine saves in the loss for the Raiders in net while freshman Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) made one save to record her first collegiate victory.

Next up for Rivier will be another GNAC contest on Wednesday night as they travel to Mount Ida College for a 7pm kickoff. Norwich will also be on the road and in action on Wednesday as they travel to Providence, R.I. for a 7pm GNAC date with Johnson & Wales University.
