Women's Lacrosse: Raiders stumble at Norwich, 14-13

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –  The Rivier University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest this afternoon to Norwich University 14-13 at Sabine Field in Northfield, VT.  The loss sends to the Raiders to 0-4 in the GNAC and an overall record of 0-6.  The Cadets are 2-1 in league play and 3-3 overall. 

The Raiders were the first to get on the board. They came out with conviction, scoring the first three goals in the first five minutes of the game.  Capitalizing off of a few Cadets mistakes that were proven to be detrimental, opening the game up to an early lead for the Raiders.  The culprits were, sophomore Amanda Burton (Pelham, NH) with two unassisted goals and freshman Stephanie Whalen (Litchfield, NH) also unassisted.

However, it was Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Ma) who contributed 2 of the next 5 unanswered goals scored.  The Junior has 21 goals and 2 assists this season, dubbing her the Cadet's leading scorer thus far.

It was the Barton-Whalen duo who plugged up the leak with 3 additional, unassisted goals to finish the half at a score of 6-6.

The beginning of the second half started with sophomore Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md) of the Cadets netting an unassisted goal at the 28:55 mark. Thereafter, the Cadets took off to a 13-6 lead before the Raider yielded their secret weapon, Junior Marin Owen (Brookline, NH).  Marin scored off an unassisted goal after teammate Ashley Leal scooped up a ground ball. The goal sparked an 8 goal scoring spree by senior Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, NH) tallied 2, 2 more from Amanda Burton and 2 more from Stephanie Whalen.

The Raiders came just 1 point short of tying up the conference standoff with a final score of, 14-13.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Laperrier (Keene, NH) came up big for the Raiders with 13 saves. Cadets sophomore goalkeeper Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, NJ) pulled off 10 saves on the day.

Amanda Barton leads the team with 9 goals and teammate Marin Owens leads in the assists category with 3. 

The Raiders will host Johnson and Wales (7-1, 4-0 GNAC) at 7PM on Tuesday, April 3rd. The Cadets will host another conference matchup Tuesday, April 3rd at 7:30PM St. Josephs of Connecticut (0-3, 1-3 GNAC)
