Softball: Raiders stumble against Albertus Magnus

(Hudson, N.H.) The Rivier University Softball team suffered a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference losses this afternoon to visiting Albertus Magnus College, 5-0 & 4-2 on the turf over at Presentation of Mary Academy. The Raiders are now 8-14 overall on the season with a 3-5 mark in the conference while the Falcons soar to 16-5 overall, 9-1 against the GNAC.

Game One: Albertus Magnus College 5, Rivier University 0 (FINAL)

The Falcons plated three runs in the first inning and it was all that was need as they went on the beat Rivier, 5-0 in the opening game of the double-header.

The Raiders managed to produce five hits off of Albertus' Kristen Cunning. Junior Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, N.H.) and sophomore Tayla LeGrand (Tewksbury, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 while sophomore Taylor Rowsell (Chelmsford, Mass.) collect the other hit as she went 1-for-2.

Rowsell also pitched a complete game for the Raiders as she allowed five runs on eleven hits while striking out seven.

Cunning matched Rowsell with a complete game effort however Cunning limited the Raiders with eight strikeouts. At the plate, Cunning smashed a solo homerun in her 2-for-4 showing at the plate. Gillian Fortier set the table with a perfect 4-for-4 effort and Aliza Esposito added a 2-for-4 afternoon in the win.

Game Two: Albertus Magnus College 4, Rivier University 2 (FINAL)

Rivier came from behind to tie the game in the third but a two-run fifth allowed Albertus to escape with a 4-2 victory and sweep the double-header.

Freshman Kellie Kennedy (Hudson, N.H.) pitched well enough for a win as she allowed four unearned runs on three hits while striking out five over her seven innings pitched. Junior Jess Silva (Tewksbury, Mass.) and LeGrand each knocked home a RBI along with Smith and freshman Julia Dailey (Dracut, Mass.) collecting base hits in the contest.

Albertus was led by Brianna Whitfield as she collected three RBI on her 1-for-2 night at the plate. Megan Ferraro earned the win with a complete-game effort limiting the Raider offense to just two runs on four hits and striking out seven.

Next up for the Raiders will be another GNAC double-header as they get set to host Emmanuel College on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 6pm at Raider Field.
