(Boston, Mass.) The 40+ game Great Northeast Athletic Conference winning streak for the Rivier University Men's Volleyball team was halted this afternoon as Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated the Raiders, 3-1 in the opening game of a GNAC Tri-Match with Anna Maria College. Rivier went on to beat Anna Maria in straight sets to finish the season with an overall record of 27-6 and lock up the top spot in the GNAC Tournament with a 15-1 record.

The Raiders suffered their first GNAC loss of the season as the Leopards won in four sets by scores of 19-25, 26-24, 25-18 and 32-30.
Junior Chris Markuson (Cupertino, California) was an offensive presence for the Raiders as he knocked down a team high 16 kills while senior Aaron Almario (Alhambra, California) had a .522 hitting percentage to go along with his 14 kills in the loss. Both Almario (5) and Markuson (4) combined for 9 total blocks. Senior Terence Matatall (Danville, NH) added 12 kills and a .409 hitting percentage for the Raiders. Defensively the libero combination of senior Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY) and sophomore Nick Ochoa (Whittier, California) had 19 digs – Bynon with 11 – and freshman Tyler Blank (Rochester, NY) added 52 assists for Rivier. Both Matatall and Blank had three solo blocks apiece.
Rivier University 3, Anna Maria College 0 (Final)
The Raiders came back and easily took care of business against Anna Maria as they took the three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-10.
Freshman Ian Wolski (Westfield, Mass.) had 8 kills as did junior Brendan Tutino (Manorville, NY) who also recorded a hitting percentage of .583 in the three set win. Freshman Matthew Ortiz (Los Angeles, California) provided 22 assists while classmate Matthew LaSance (Madison, Conn.) added 12 assist in the Raider victory. Sophomore Mike Hovnanian (Methuen, Mass.) and Mike Hadder (Yucaipa, California) were solid along the defensive line as they each had 7 digs to lead the team.
Rivier has earned the top spot in the upcoming GNAC Tournament and will await their next opponent to be determined following Tuesday night's Quarterfinal matchups.
