NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier University Men's Soccer team closed out the month of September with a 2-0 setback to visiting Johnson & Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action under the lights at Joanne Merrill Field. The loss moves the Raiders to an overall record of 1-8-1 and 0-3-0 in the conference while the Wildcats improve to 6-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the GNAC.

It took until the 44th minute before the first goal was scored. Johnson & Wales sophomore Nick Gutekunst (East Northport, N.Y.) perfectly one-timed a pass from freshman Austin Sweeney (Nutley, N.J.) as he rifled it into the lower corner for his 6th goal of the season.

JWU added to their lead late in the second half when freshman Garret Groeling (Nutley, N.J.) made a beautiful read along the near side and sent a cross into the box where senior Erik Schneider (Plantsville, Conn.) dove and was able to head the ball into the back of the net. It was Schneider's first goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) made seven saves on the night for Rivier. His counterpart, JWU freshman keeper Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, Calif.) earned his first career clean sheet as the Wildcat defense limited the Raiders to just two shots, none of which were on net.

The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday night as they host Emmanuel College in a 7pm GNAC contest at Joanne Merrill Field. Johnson & Wales will host Salve Regina University in a non-conference affair on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
