Raiders Fall Short in 6-5 Loss to Mustangs

Newton, MA – Alumni Field  The Rivier University Raiders (3 – 3; 0 – 2 GNAC) lost 6-5 to the Mt Ida College Mustangs (4 – 3; 2 – 0 GNAC) today in a GNAC Conference game. 
Mt Ida took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Mike Markevich (Sophomore – Westminster, MA), Jon Berry (Freshmen, Chichester, NH) and Zach Rosen (Senior, East Greenwich, RI).  The Mustangs added to their lead with another strike from Markevich to open the scoring in the second quarter.  The Raiders answered with a goal from Danny Hooper(Senior - Wakefield, R.I.) to cut into the Mustangs lead and bring the score to 4-1 at halftime.
Rivier pushed hard in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 3 to 1 and closing the gap to 5-4.  Kyle Graham(Sophomore - Londonderry, N.H.), two goals, and Sean Given(Freshman - Londonderry, N.H.), one goal, provided the offense with the pair sparking the Raiders' comeback.  Shane Flaherty (Freshmen, Halifax, MA) provided a goal for the home team to keep them a goal up at the end of three quarters.
Markevich found the net again for Mt Ida to pull the home team ahead 6-4 in the fourth quarter.  Tom Johnson(Freshman - Londonderry, N.H.) scored to pull the Raiders within one, 6-5, with just over two minutes to play.  The Mustangs were able to hold onto the lead and pull out the tight victory.       
Clark Plummer(Sophomore - Londonderry, N.H.) finished with sixteen saves in goal for the Raiders.
Rivier returns to action this Saturday when they host Emmanuel College at 1:00 pm in a GNAC contest.  Mt Ida hosts Daniel Webster College on Saturday at 3:00 pm
