Men's Basketball: Chappell nets 38 in season opener vs Curry

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier University Men's Basketball team opened up their 2019-20 season this evening with a tough 76-72 loss to visiting Curry College in non-conference action inside the Muldoon Gymnasium. It was the season opener for both squads as the Raiders are now 0-1 while the Colonials improve to 1-0.

Senior Issaiah Chappell (Sunapee, N.H.) went off for 38 points on 15-of-24 shooting while collecting eight rebounds and dishing out three assists. Sophomore Pharaoh Davis (Plainville, Mass.) added 14 points in his Raider debut and junior Tyler Bradenese (Billerica, Mass.) pulled down 11 rebounds. Junior Jack McCarthy (Rowley, Mass.) also had a solid night as he contributed six points and seven rebounds in defeat.

Curry saw senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) led the team with a double-double of 28 points (8-of-14 from the floor) and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Classmate Kieran Carroll (Greenwich, Conn.) also registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while fellow veteran, senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wisc.) added 16 points of his own in the win.

Rivier will return to the floor on Sunday afternoon as they welcome Lesley University to the Muldoon for a 3pm tipoff. Curry will be back in action tomorrow as they remain on the road to play against Lesley. Game time is set for 8pm at Medford High School.
