Field Hockey: Raiders suffer 5-3 setback at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rivier University Field Hockey team suffered a tough 5-3 setback this afternoon to Johnson and Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at SMAC Turf Field. The loss moves the Raiders to 5-8 overall on the season and 2-3 in the conference while the Wildcats improve to 5-10 overall, 3-2 in the GNAC.
JWU got on the board in the first quarter when Jillian Miele was able to escape the defenders and find the back of the net in the 11th minute. Rivier would climb back into it as freshman Hunter Langley (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked home a pass from classmate Madison Streeter (Westminster, Vt.) in the 18th minute of action.
Just over a minute later, JWU responded with another tally. McKayala Weaver received a pass from Natalie Rivas and riffled a shot into the lower corner to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. However with a second left to play in the first half, freshman Carissa Letendre banged home a loose ball in front of the cage to knot things up at 2 all after the first 30 minutes.
The second half was all Wildcats as they scored three unanswered goals to secure the win. Rachel DeVore gave JWU the lead as she swatted home a pass from Miele at 42:04 and Weaver extended the lead as she netted her second of the game at 50:10.
In the final frame, Miele rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats as she notched her second of the game at 54:20 with an assist credited to Alaina Nardslico.
Junior Nicole Mansfield (Acton, Mass.) quickly retaliated as she scored an unassisted goal at 55:42 to make it a 5-3 final in favor of Johnson & Wales.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) stopped six shots on the afternoon while the duo of Madison Flaxington and Grace Pendergast made three saves for the Wildcats.
Rivier will remain on the road in their next scheduled contest which will be on Thursday evening at Regis College. Game time is set for 7pm.
