Field Hockey: Raiders suffer another one-goal loss; fall to Becker 1-0

(Nashua, N.H.) It was a tough evening for the Rivier University Field Hockey team as they dropped a non-conference contest to visiting Becker College, 1-0 up at Raider Field. The loss, which is the eighth one goal loss of the season, sends the Raiders to 2-11 on the year while the Hawks improve to 5-8.

The game was controlled early on by Rivier as the team outshot Becker (6-2) and held the advantage on penalty corners (6-2) through the opening 35 minutes of play. The Raiders had an opportunity late in the stanza to take the lead as freshman Maegan Sheehy (Sabattus, Maine) dribbled around the Hawk goalie and slapped a shot towards the net where Becker junior Amy Cooper (Monument, Colo.) was able to knock it down and make a defensive save.

A flurry of action in front of the Raider net during the 39th minute led to Becker being awarded a penalty stroke. Freshman Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) lifted her shot into the upper left 90 for the game's only goal.

Senior keeper Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.) was outstanding in net as she recorded eight saves on the night. Becker freshman Victoria Pilpel (Germantown, Md.) made five saves for her third shutout of 2018.

Rivier will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Johnson and Wales University in a 1pm Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Raider Field. It will also be senior day for the Raiders as they honor the three graduating seniors – Foster, Linsey Roth (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Mikayla Ramsdell (Salem, N.H.) will be sent off in a pre-game ceremony. Becker will host Dean College in their next scheduled contest on Sunday afternoon at 12pm.
