Field Hockey: Raiders fall to Regis late, 1-0

(Nashua, N.H.) For the second consecutive contest the Rivier University Field Hockey team suffered a one goal loss as they fell this afternoon to visiting Regis College, 1-0 at Raider Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. With the loss, the Raiders are now 1-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in the conference while Regis earns their first win at 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the GNAC.

It was a classic back-and-forth battle as each team had their opportunities in the opening 35 minutes. Rivier senior goalkeeper Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.) and Regis sophomore netminder Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) were brilliant in turning away scoring chances as the team's played to a scoreless first half.

More of the same occurred in the second half until the 64th minute of action. A clearing attempt by Regis was sent down the field where senior Aineed Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) was able to corral the ball and apply pressure towards the net. Her pass was sent to the front of the box where junior Jillian Schneyer (Worcester, Mass.) was able to deflect the ball up and over the left pad and into the back of the net. It was Schneyer's first goal of the season along with her career and proved to be the game-winner.

Foster finished the contest with nine saves while Winkin stopped all 14 attempts she faced. The shots were pretty much even throughout with Rivier holding the 16-15 edge while Regis held the 8-6 advantage on penalty corners.

For the Raiders, junior Jaclyn Fraser (Wilmington, Mass.) took five shots, four on net, and both senior Linsey Roth (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Mansfield (Acton, Mass.) each saw three shots swatted away.

Rivier will return to action on Wednesday evening as they travel up to Henniker, New Hampshire for a non-conference date with New England College. Game time is set for 7pm. Regis, meanwhile, will enjoy a week off before the host Saint Joseph's College (Me.) next Saturday afternoon.
