Field Hockey: Raiders fall in overtime at JWU

(Providence, R.I.) The Rivier University Field Hockey team battled to a heart breaking 3-2 overtime defeat this afternoon against Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest. The loss sends the Raiders' record to 3-12 on the season with an 0-8 conference mark while the Wildcats improve to 5-11, 4-4 GNAC.

The host Wildcats were able to strike early as Kaylyn Forest netted her second goal of the season just 1:35 into the contest. Rivier was able to find the equalizer eight minutes later when junior Linsey Roth (Tyngsboro, Mass.) knocked home a one-timer from freshman Nicole Mansfield (Acton, Mass.) at 9:35.

JWU would then take the 2-1 lead when Giovanna Ciavardoni, who had assisted on Forest's goal, recorded her eighth of the season off a pass from Shaina Thompson at 20:12. Minutes later the Raiders would again tie the game as Roth netted her second of the game at 22:09 on a shot to the lower left corner.

The teams would play to a scoreless 2nd half to force overtime where JWU's Mackenzie DeLaney tapped in a through ball for her third of the year for the game-winner.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Foster (Lebanon, N.H.) was outstanding for Rivier as she made 10 saves while her counterpart, Claire Nolan allowed the only two shots she faced on net to get by her.

The Raiders will round out the 2017 season tomorrow afternoon as they host Castleton University at 2pm.
