Baseball Sweeps JWU on Senior Day

NASHUA, NH: The Rivier baseball team swept the Johnson & Wales Wildcats on their senior day this afternoon. The Raiders celebrated the careers of six seniors. Devin Albino (N. Smithfield, RI), Corey Cochran (Salem, NH), Conor Dines (Framingham, MA), Brandon Kelly (Lincoln, RI), Jake Mainey (Merrimack, NH), and Cameron Way (El Cajon, CA).

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/30/22

- Score: Rivier 4, JWU 2. G2 Rivier 7, JWU 5

- Records: Rivier (5-26, 4-14 GNAC), JWU (13-24, 11-7 GNAC)

GAME ONE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Raiders got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning after a Patrick Quinn (Seabrook, NH) single to right field.

- The Wildcats would respond to tie the game up in the top of the third on a misplayed ball in the outfield giving Riley Hasson an RBI single. Rivier would bounce back to regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Jacob Boudreau (Auburn, NH) RBI triple.

- JWU would tie it back up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a Thorin Sanchez-Guerra single through the right side of the infield. This didn't faze the Raiders as they would put up two more in the bottom half of the inning. Dines would bat in the go-ahead runs on a two RBI double to left field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Mainey got the win on the mound for the Raiders after going five innings allowing just four hits and striking out three.

-  Dines was 1-for-2 on the day with the game-winning double to plate two.

-  Hasson and Guerra had the only RBIs of the game for the Wildcats. They both picked up one hit in the ball game.

GAME TWO:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Raiders would get on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer to left field by Dines. Riv would go up 3-0 in the fifth on a fielding error by JWU defense.

- The Wildcats would answer back and take the lead in the top of the sixth on a fielding error, and a base hit. With two on and one out AJ Braid would step into the box and deliver a three-run shot to right field to put them up 4-3.

- Rivier would answer back in the bottom of the sixth again with a Timothy Scott (Lowell, MA) single up the middle to push the tying run across. Albino would get a chance to swing the bat with the bases loaded in the inning and drew an RBI walk to give them back the lead 5-4. Boudreau would then come up with a two-run double down the left-field line to push their lead to 7-4.

- The seventh inning consisted of one run for the visiting squad on a Trevor Juan solo homer to left field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cochran would pitch the majority of the contest 5.1 innings with nine hits and striking out four. Devin Albino would get the win, however, with the game getting tied up, with Kelly getting the save.  

- Boudreau and Dines picked up one hit each along with both having two RBIs.

- Braid was a solid 2-for-3 with his three-run homerun.
