Baseball: Raiders stumble at home to Fitchburg State

(Nashua, N.H.) It was a beautiful night for baseball inside Historic Holman Stadium where the Rivier University Baseball team fell to visiting Fitchburg State University, 13-3 in a non-conference contest under the lights. The Raiders are now 7-26 overall on the season while the Falcons improve to 19-7.

A six-run second inning was the difference as Fitchburg State pounded out 20 hits on the evening led by Brendan Ferrell (Plymouth, Mass.) who finished 4-for-6 with a RBI. Alexander Bissanti (Franklin, Mass.) added a 3-for-4 showing at the dish with a RBI and Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.), Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.), Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) and Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) all chipped in with two knocks apiece.

Junior Eric Maxfield (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss on the hill for the Raiders as he allowed nine runs (all earned) on eleven hits while walking five and striking out two. Sophomore Daniel White (Augusta, Maine) then settled things down with 3.1 innings of work surrending one earned run before the freshman duo of Devin Albino (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Brandon Kelly (Lincoln, R.I.) closed things out.

Senior Brandon Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) recorded the only Raider hit in the contest as his leadoff triple in the first inning was the only hit allowed by both Fitchburg State pitchers Kyle Nocera (Mendon, Mass.) and Lucas Amico (Leominster, Mass.). Nocera got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season with five innings of one-hit baseball allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out 11. Amico spun four hitless innings in relief earning his third save of the year striking out five.

Rivier will return to Historic Holman Stadium on Thursday night as they host Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in another non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7pm. Fitchburg State, meanwhile, are scheduled to be on the road tomorrow afternoon for a conference contest at MCLA.
