Baseball: Raiders tripped up on road, fall to Newbury 18-7

(Northborough, Mass.) The Rivier University Baseball team suffered their second consecutive loss this afternoon to Newbury College, 18-7 in a non-conference contest played at the New England Baseball Complex. The Raiders are now 5-17 overall on the season while the Nighthawks complete the season sweep of Rivier and improve to 4-12.

Trailing 6-2 entering the fifth inning, the Raiders were able to even the score on freshman Connor Dines (Wayland, Mass.) RBI single up the middle. However Newbury was able to answer right back by scoring tweleve runs over the next three innings for the win.

Senior Brandon Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Corey Cochran (Salem, N.H.) each had two-hit, one RBI games for the Raiders while senior Jorge Martinez (Methuen, Mass.), junior Eric Maxfield (Lowell, Mass.) and Dines each added their own RBI in the loss.

Maxfield was credited with the loss on the hill as he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and four strikeouts in relief of freshman starter Dax Billingsley (Lynn, Mass.) – who went three innings giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out three. Sophomore Cameron Way (El Cajon, Calif.), freshman Brandon Kelly (Lincoln, R.I.) and freshman Giovanni Covino (Methuen, Mass.) combined to finish out the ballgame surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on ten hits over two innings of work.

Newbury's Ryan West picked up his first win of the season in relief as he tossed three innings holding the Raiders to just one unearned run on two hits. Nick Dorazio pitched effeciently over his 4.1 innings of work coming in relief of left-handed starter Leo Frisella.

Brian Cipolla had himself an afternoon for the Nighthawks as he went 3-for-5 with three doubles and Brett Cabral finished a triple shy of the cycle on his 4-for-4, six RBI, two double and a home run performace at the dish. Chris Paulino also collected four hits and four RBI in the win for Newbury.

Rivier will return to action this weekend as they host both Suffolk University and Colby-Sawyer College in a pair of Great Northeast Atheltic Conference double-headers at Harvey Woods Field. First up will be Suffolk on Saurday followed by Colby-Sawyer on Sunday with game times at 1pm.
