Carlberg, Raiders blank Maine-Presque Isle

(Nashua, New Hampshire) Junior lefthander Steven Carlberg (Dover, NH) spun a complete game four hit shutout this afternoon as the Rivier University Baseball team blanked the visiting Owls of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 3-0 in a non-conference contest at Historic Holman Stadium in downtown Nashua.

Carlberg (1-5) struck out seven and walked three in his first career complete game.

UMPI's Dylan Worster allowed just one earned run as he pitched all 8 innings, giving up 9 hits and walking two while retiring two Raiders by way of the K.

Rivier (3-24 overall) got a RBI two-out double in the third inning from junior JJ Montello (Nashua, NH) that scored sophomore Frederick O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.). The Raiders were able to score two more runs in the eighth thanks to a couple of defensive miscues by the Owls.

Junior David Cusack (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman Zachary St. Cyr (Rochester, NH) both went 2-for-4 and freshman Adam Arkell (Dover, NH) came off the bench and finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

UMPI's Justin Bergeron collected two of the Owls' four hits as he finished 2-for-4. Cam Morrell and Adam Begos each added a base knock in the loss.

This is the second shutout victory for the Raiders this season as sophomore Matthew Keefe (Bradford, Mass.) and junior Alex Mears (Salem, NH) combined to blank Newbury College on 4/10 for Rivier's first win of the season.

The Raiders will return to Historic Holman Stadium tomorrow afternoon as they host Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double-header beginning at 1:05pm. Maine-Presque Isle (1-23) will travel to Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass. to take on Fisher College tonight at 7:05pm for the first of a three game set with the Falcons.
