(Northfield, VT) On Saturday April 20th the Rivier University Baseball team traveled to Vermont to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents the Norwich University Cadets. The Raiders took game one by a score of 3-1 but fell in the second game 8-5. The split left the Raiders' overall record at 8-27 and 3-11 in conference play. After the double-header Norwich' record stood at 6-18 overall and 5-9 in the GNAC.
Game One: Rivier University 3, Norwich University 1
Freshman starter Nick Pica (Hampstead, NH) struck out 13 batters to earn the victory in a pitcher's duel in game one. Pica assumed command of the Cadets as he allowed just one run over seven innings of work. Rivier jumped out to a 1-0 lead after an RBI single by freshman Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, NH). Ball would give the Raiders the 2-1 lead as he came around to score as senior tri-captain John DiBenedetto (Tampa, FL) collected the RBI. This would be all the offense Rivier would need but they would add a run in the top of the seventh as freshman outfielder Marc Medeiros (Arlington, MA) would drive in classmate Nick Gagnon (Providence, RI) on an RBI single.
Norwich got six innings from starter Brad Hudson who allowed two hits, two runs, and struck out six. Despite hits from several Cadets, they were only able to score one run when Mike Doyle drove in Sean Gerich in the bottom of the third inning.
Game Two: Norwich University 8, Rivier University 5
Norwich got revenge in game two which saw both offenses combine for 13 runs. Rivier was first to strike as senior tri-captain Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) collected the RBI Sac fly in the top of the first. The Raiders would add two more in the top of the fourth as Velez would drive Ball in off of an RBI double and sophomore Mike Scanlon (Plantsville, CT) hit a sac fly to bring in Velez. The final two Rivier runs would come in the fifth and sixth innings off the bats of Medieros and Gagnon. Freshman Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, VT) got roughed up as he allowed seven runs in just three innings of work. He was relieved by classmate Zachary Briggs (North Kingstown, RI) who struck out three and allowed only two hits in his two innings of operation.
Jacob Muetterties toed the rubber for the Cadets in game two and he struck out six batters and allowed four runs over five innings of work. He was supported by Dustin Shimkus, Nicholas Gendron, John Flanagan, and Charles Schaub who each drove in runs for Norwich in the victory. Brian Whaley struck out one in the top of the seventh to earn the save.
