Pica throws 91 pitches in complete game 1-0 loss to Plymouth State

(Watertown, MA) Rivier University freshman Nicholas Pica allowed just one run but the Raiders bats were silenced for the fourth straight game as Rivier lost 1-0 to Plymouth State University.

Pica, a native of Hampstead, NH, threw just 91 pitches in his complete game effort. He pitched 8 innings allowed just the one run on five hits while striking out 4. Pica did not issue a walk but did hit two batters.

The Panthers, who improved to 9-6 on the season, scored the only run of the game in the third inning. Justin Walsh singled and stole second after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt. With two outs Ryan McIntos laced a single up the middle and Walsh was able to scamper home.

Jeff Runnals (2-1) earned the win on the mound as he tossed 7+ innings allowing just two hits and fanning four. Spencer Webb entered the game in the eighth and finished the game to preserve the shutout and earn his second save of 2013.

Pica falls to 0-2 on the season while the Raiders see their record drop to 1-12.

Rivier will be back in action tomorrow night when they take on New England College in a 5pm double-header at Maplewood Park in Malden, Mass. Plymouth State will travel to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday as they begin Little East Conference play.
