(Winter Haven, FL) The Rivier baseball team falls to 0-6 on the season as they lost a pair of games against Trinity International University by scores of 15-7 and 21-4 this afternoon at the Chain o' Lakes Complex.
Despite keeping the Raiders in the game though 4 2/3 innings, sophomore Steven Carlberg (Dover, NH) notched the loss in his first start of the season. The methodical and well prepared starter was hitting his spots and only gave up one earned run. After Carlberg exited the game with the Raiders only down by two the bullpen was tagged for 9 runs in the last two innings. The Raiders would drop game one, 15-7.
All though several errors by the Raiders defense proved to be costly, on the other side of the ball the offense posted their highest total of 7 runs. Leading the offensive attack was freshman leftfielder, Mark Medeiros (Arlington, MA) - who had 3 RBI and senior tri-captain Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) added 2 RBI of his own. Freshman shortstop Taylor Black (West Springfield, MA) led the team with 3 runs scored in the first game of the afternoon.
The second game of the afternoon saw a contrasting lineup that was highlighted by freshman leadoff hitter Kywane Thomas (Hartford, CT). Thomas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases in his first collegiate baseball start. Sophomore Bryar King (Berlin, NH) was 2-4 on the afternoon and had the Raiders sole extra base hit. On the defensive end King lead the Raiders with 5 put outs. The freshman trio of David Feole (Scituate, RI), Fred O'Brien (South Boston, MA), and Austin Biery (Raymond, NH) had the other hits for Rivier.
Getting the start in game two was junior Justin Chenevert (Wilmington, MA) who gave up 14 runs in two innings of work. The combination of freshmen Nick Gagnon (Providence, RI), Zachary Briggs (North Kingstown, RI), Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, VT) closed out the game for the Raiders and combined for 4 strikeouts.
The Raiders will look to rebound in their next scheduled double-header on Saturday when they take on Gordon College.
