The 1997 men's soccer team was the first men's team to win a GNAC championship. In the previous season, the men's team lost in the final game of the GNAC Tournament during a penalty kick shootout. The following year (1997), only the fourth season of the team's existence, the Raiders played one of the most challenging schedules in Division III and returned to the GNAC Championship, this time to win the title - defeating Albertus Magnus College in the semifinals and Emerson College in the Championship. Scott Thomas, the first men's soccer coach at Rivier and the most successful soccer coach in Raider history, was a coach and teacher of great expertise and passion who brought together a group of young men from different parts of the country and built them into a cohesive and competitive championship team.
