Macken, Lopez named Student-Athletes of the Month

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Athletic Department is pleased to announce that junior Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman Pedro Lopez (Methuen, Mass.) have been selected as the Student-Athletes of the Month for October 2017.

Female Student-Athlete of the Month: Hayley Macken, Women’s Volleyball

Macken was selected after guiding the Women’s Volleyball team to a 10-5 record in the month of October and securing the third overall seed in the ever tough Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament. She appeared in 35 sets over her 11 games played compiling 310 assists (8.86 assists per set), 43 kills and 11 service aces to go along with her defensive prowess of 87 digs and 14 total blocks. Macken dished out 30+ assists in five games during the month including a high of 46 assists in a 3-1 win over Saint Joseph’s College (Maine).

This is the second time in her career that Macken has been selected as the Rivier Female Student-Athlete of the Month (September 2016).

Male Student-Athlete of the Month: Pedro Lopez, Men’s Soccer

Lopez was chosen as the Male Student-Athlete of the Month for his candor and mental strength during the tough 1-7 October stretch for the Men’s Soccer team. The first year forward netted two goals and assisted on two others over the final four games of the season.

“I truly believe he embodies all of the qualities I’m looking for in my student-athletes.” said Head Men’s Soccer Coach Hayden Barbosa. “He has already made a tremendous impact on the program. I am proud to have him.”

This is the first time in his career that Lopez has been selected as the Rivier Male Student-Athlete of the Month.
